Student-Athletes Receive Degrees In SSU's Largest Graduating Class

SAVANNAH, Ga. – On May 4, 2013, the 182nd Savannah State University commencement ceremony went down as the largest graduating class in the school's history. Among the more than 350 receiving graduate and undergraduate degrees were 30 student-athletes.

A total of 13 student-athletes conferred by President Dr. Cheryl Dozier, did so with honors. All 30 earned undergraduate degrees.

Three student-athletes graduated Summa Cum Laude (GPA 3.75-4.00) -- the highest of academic honors. Former football player, Daniel Heslop graduated with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics. Softball's Cassie Standard earned her bachelor's degree in Behavior Analysis, and women's tennis Sandra Dis Kristjansdottir earned a bachelor's degree in Biology.

Graduating Magna Cum Laude (GPA 3.40-3.74), were volleyball's Ashlee Butler with a bachelor's degree in Behavior Analysis, and baseball's Joseph McCary III with a bachelor's degree in Accounting. 

Eight student-athletes graduated Cum Laude (GPA 3.00-3.39) including: volleyball's Bianca Helton, and Chikia Jones; baseball's Darien Campball and Kevin Herlihy; women's basketball's Blessing Uba; track and field's Aleah Hordges; softball's Chelsea Parrish; and women's tennis' Ge'Anne Hilton.

Retired Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears of the Georgia Supreme Court, and Beach High School graduate, spoke at the commencement ceremony. Spears is the first African-American female chief justice of any state's highest appellate court. Sears is also the first woman and youngest person to serve as a judge of the Fulton County (Ga.) Superior Court.
