SAVANNAH, Ga.-
David Richards had a big day as Savannah State defeated North Carolina A&T in a double header at Tiger Field.
Richards scored the first run of the game in a 2-0 victory in game one and singled in the game winning hit in the nightcap, a 4-3 victory.
On the day, Richards had four hits, two RBIs and one run for the Tigers (26-18, 14-5).
In the first game, all the scoring took place in the second inning.
Richards and
Drew Quinney both hit singles. Richards scored on a sacrifice bunt by
Darien Campbell for a 1-0 lead and Quinney came across home plate after a single by
Todd Hagen. to put SSU ahead 2-0.
Quinney and
Kevin Herlihy had two hits each for the Tigers.
Kyle McGowin pitched a complete game and struck out eight batters while giving up four hits.
Luke Tender had a double for the Aggies. Brent Moore took the loss, giving up eight hits. A&T left five runners on base.
In the second game, A&T quickly took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Kelvin Freeman and Cameron Jergens singled in runs.
SSU answered to tie the game in the bottom of the inning as
Parker Nix hit a RBI double to score Herlihy, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Richards hit a triple that scored Nix.
The Tigers had runners in scoring position in the second as Campbell walked and
Lee Moore singled. Hagen reached on an fielder's choice and an error by the Aggies allowed Campbell to score to give Savannah State a 3-2 edge.
A&T tied the game at three in the top of the fourth.
With two outs in the fifth, Nix singled and stole second and scored the winning run on a single by Richards.
Richards had three hits and two RBIs while Nix had two hits and scored twice. Moore added a pair of singles for the Tigers.
Ethan Glass pitched 2.1 innings in relief to earn the win. Glass gave up one hit.
Freeman had three hits for North Carolina A&T (14-30, 7-12). Josh Ganus gave up eight hits and four runs in a losing effort.
A&T left six runners on base while SSU left five.
