SSU Falls At Mercer

Box Score MACON, Ga.- Mercer pounded out 16 hits and four home runs in a 18-3 win over Savannah State at Claude Smith Field.

The Bears scored runs in the first four innings for a 14-1 lead.

Mercer led 2-0 after the first inning but the Tigers got one back in the top of the second when Drew Quinney led off with a solo home run.

In the bottom of the inning, Mercer's Chesny Young hit a three-run homer and Nick Backlund hit a two-run home run for a 7-1 advantage.

Young hit a two-run double in the third and Derrick Workman added a two-run home run to give the Bears a 11-1 lead.

CJ Reed hit a three-run homeer for Mercer in the fourth to make the score 14-1.

In the seventh, Sasha Lagarde and Young both hit two- run doubles for the Bears to up their lead to 18-1.

Savannah State had four hits and scored twice in the ninth as Joshua Cockrell, a freshman outfielder from Macon, hit a two-run double to drive home Michael McHugh and David Richards.

Lee Moore had three singles for the Tigers (15-10) while Cockrell drove in two runs. Ross Hunter was tagged with the loss. Hunter gave up 11 runs, 8 hits, and 4 walks while striking out 3 in 2.1 innings.

Young led Mercer (21-7) with 7 RBI. He also had 3 hits and scored 3 times. Eric Nyquist pityched 5 innings and gave up 4 hits and 1 run.
