Pirates Rally Past Savannah State

Box Score GREENVILLE, N.C.- Miguel Paul made two free throws with 13 seconds left to lift East Carolina to a come from behind 66-65 victory over Savannah State in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament played at Minges Coliseum.

The crowd of 2,053 saw SSU (19-15) lead 45-30 with 14:05 remaining but the Pirates whittled their deficit down and took a 64-63 lead with 47 seconds left after a 3-pointer by Paul.

A layup by Rashad Hassan with 25 seconds on the clock gave the Tigers a 65-64 advantage.

Hassan was fouled on the play but missed the free throw.

On the next ECU possession, Paul missed a layup but was fouled by Arnold Louis with 13 seconds on the clock.

Paul made both free throws for the game winner.

Savannah State was cold from the free throw line, making 6 of 14 shots while the Pirates converted 20 of 30 attempts.

The Tigers, who out-rebounded ECU 37 to 36, were led by Devin Williams' 18 points and 4 assists. Louis added 15 points and Jyles Smith chipped in 11 rebounds and 4 blocks.

SSU led by 7 at the half and held East Carolina to make 29.2 percent of their shots in the opening period.

Savannah State, who scored the first five points of the game, jumped out to a 14-3 lead and expanded it to 30-15 with 4:33 left in the first half after a dunk by Smith.

ECU closed the half with a 10-2 run to go into the locker room with some momentum.

Layups by Williams and Louis gave SSU a 11 point cushion early in the second half.

A 3-pointer by Maurice Kemp cut ECU's deficit to 36-28 but the Tigers answered with eight straight points to build a 15 point lead at the 14:33 mark.

ECU (19-12) was led by Kemp's 21 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals.

SSU shot 56 percent from he floor in the second half while East Carolina shot 50 percent.
