Tigers Starts Season With Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State baseball team started their 2013 season with a double-header sweep of Presbyterian at Tiger Field.

SSU won the opener 3-1 and finished off the Blue Hose with a 1-0 victory in game two.

In the first contest, Presbyterian left the bases loaded in the second inning but could only score one run. Brandon Paul led off with a single and later scored on a single by Jay Lizanich.

The Tigers scored all their runs in the fifth inning as they collected four hits.

Kevin Herlihy led off with a single. Following outs by Lee Moore and Chris Arnold, Zach Bryant singled, Todd Hagen doubled home Herlihy and Mendez Elder cracked a two-run single that scored Bryant and Hagen.

Hagen had three hits for SSU while Herlihy had two and Elder drove in two runs.

Kyle McGowin earned the win as he pitched seven innings and struck out seven.

Beau Dees struck out seven for PC while Paul and Lizanich both had two RBI.

Presbyterian left nine runners on base.

In the second game, the Tigers scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.

Parker Nix walked and came home after Arnold reached on an error by the shortstop.

SSU made five errors in the field and only had two hits at the plate. Hagen and Arnold had the only hits for the Tigers.

Ross Hunter pitched 4.1 innings for Savannah State (2-0) but walked three batters. Jackson May and Eric Ricks each pitched 1.1 innings in relief with Ricks earning the win.

The Blue Hose, who stranded 13 runners, collected four hits. Brandon Martin had a double and a single. Chandler Knox took the loss while striking out five batters.
