Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C.- In the final game of the 2013 season, the Savannah State Tigers made a strong showing in the second half but a 35-0 halftime deficit proved to be too much to overcome in a 41-14 loss to North Carolina A&T.
SSU, under the direction of first-year head coach
Earnest Wilson III, ends the season with a nine game losing streak along with a 1-11 overall record and 0-8 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
The Aggies (6-4, 3-4) scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and added two more in the second quarter.
The crowd of 7, 332 at Aggie Stadium saw A&T score touchdowns on five of their first six possessions.
Savannah State never got pass the Aggies 34 in the opening period.
The Tigers prevented a shutout in their first possession of the third quarter when
Sheldon Barnes caught a 49-yard touchdown pass from
Leon Prunty with 9:56 on the clock.
Preston McCarthy kicked the extra point to make the score 35-7.
The key play on the 12-play, 77-yard drive was a 16-yard reception by
Cantrell Frazier when the Tigers faced a third and 12.
A&T scored a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to expand their lead to 41-7 but the Tigers answered two drives later when Edward Lackey caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from
Victorian Hardison with 1:22 left in the contest. McCarthy's extra point made the score 41-14.
The six-play, 99-yard drive was keyed by a 30-yard catch by
Kris Drummond on a fourth and one.
Savannah State ended the game with 320 offensive yards.
Prunty passed for 160 yards and a touchdown while Hardison passed for a career-high 141 yards and a touchdown.
The Tigers running game was limited to 19 yards on the day.
Lackey had his best day of the season with seven catches for 99 yards and a score while Drummond caught three passes for 64 yards.
Defensively,
Marquis Smith led SSU with 11 tackles while
Justin Dixon and Greg Brown tallied nine each.
The A&T offense produced 464 yards while the defense had six sacks.
Tarik Cohen ran for 98 yards and two touchdowns while Lewis Kindle passed for 234 yards and a touchdown and Xavier Griffin hauled in three passes for 94 yards. D'Vonte Grant had 11 tackles.
It was the last game for a dozen SSU seniors.
