ST. LOUIS, Mo.- Savannah State battle back from a 12 point deficit but could not hold on as the Tigers fell to St. Louis 67-59 before a crowd of 6,543 at Chaifetz Arena.
SSU trailed 46-34 with 13:22 left in the second half but a 17-4 rally put the Tigers ahead 51-50.
Two free throws by Mike McCall gave the Billikens a 50-45 edge with 8:26 on the clock.
Savannah State answered with six straight points from
Rashad Hassan as the senior forward made a layup followed by jumper and a pair of free throws to give the Tigers a one point lead with six minutes left.
St. Louis (11-3) went ahead 61-55 but a layup by
Arnold Louis cut the Tigers deficit to four with 39 seconds left.
The home team then scored six straight points as they finished the contest with a 6-2 mini-run.
Both teams shot well from the floor.
SSU shot 53.6 percent from the field in the second half and 49 percent for the night while the Billikens shot 44.7 percent from the field and made 47.1 percent of their 3-point attempts.
The Tigers won the rebounding battle 36 to 20 but only made 10 of 19 free throw attempts. St. Louis was 25 of 31 from the charity stripe.
SSU (5-9) ends a five game road trip with their sixth consecutive loss.
Preston Blackman had 13 points and four assists for SSU while
Cedric Smith added 11 points and Hassan scored 10.
Jyles Smith had a game-high nine rebounds.
St. Louis jumped out to a 12-2 lead but the Tigers would get within four on two occasions in the opening period.
A dunk by
Marcus Hutchins made the score 19-15 with 9:03 left but a 10-4 run by St. Louis gave the Billiken a 29-19 edge with 5:17 on the clock.
SSU trailed 33-25 at the half.
McCall led four St. Louis players in double figures with a game-high 16 points.
