Tigers Go Cold In 2nd Half In Loss To WIU

Box Score MACOMB, Ill.- Western Illinois held Savannah State without a field goal the final 10:23 as the Leathernecks posted a 39-35 win over SSU in Western Hall before a crowd of 1,236 .

WIU overcame a 11 point halftime deficit by shooting 58 percent from the field in the second half.

The loss, SSU's fifth in a row, drops the Tigers overall record to 5-8.

Savannah State led 8-6 but used a 12-2 run to go ahead 20-8 with 5:17 left in the opening half, after a 3-pointer by Robert Burger.

Terell Parks' jumper cut SSU's lead to 10 but Khiry White answered with a 3-pointer at the 3:15 mark to give the Tigers their largest lead of the night at 23-10.

SSU led 23-12 at the half.

The Tigers shot 43.5 percent from the floor in the first period while making 3 of 4 3-point attempts. WIU shot 33.3 percent from the field in the first half.

WIU started the second half with a 7-0 run to pull within 23-19 but a 3-pointer by Burger and a jumper by White gave the Tigers a nine point edge with 15:18 left.

The Leathernecks would answer with a 17-5 rally to take a 36-33 lead with 27 seconds remaining.

A 3-pointer by Blackman gave SSU a 33-28 lead with 10:23 left in the game but the Leathernecks scored eight unanswered points to go ahead by three.

Two free throws by Cedric Smith got the Tigers within 36-35 with 21 seconds left but Jordan Foster made 3 of 4 free throw attempts in the final seconds to seal the win for WIU (11-3).

The Leathernecks last field goal was made with 7:47 remaining.

The Tigers edged WIU 27 to 26 in rebounds.

White led SSU with 10 points while Arnold Louis grabbed eight rebounds.

Adam Link led WIU with 10 points while Parks had 9 points, 8 rebounds and 7 blocks.
