Hornets Hold Off SSU

NORFOLK, Va.- Jordan Elliot struck out seven batters to lead Delaware State to a 10-8 win over Savannah State in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference baseball tournament played at Miller Filed.
Both teams had 12 hits but SSU (19-33) made four errors in the contest.
Eddie Sorondo hit a solo home run in the first inning to help the Hornets jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Todd Hagen hit a two run double in the fifth to help Savannah State pulled within 3-2 but DSU answered in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own and added five runs off four hits in the sixth to expand their advantage to 10-2.
Not to be outdone, the Tigers sent four runners across the plate in the top of the seventh.
Uriah Virgo and Ian Farris led off with back-to-back doubles. After a Hagen fly-out, Darien Campbell singled to bring home Virgo and Joseph McCrary singled home Farris. Julius Green grounded out to third but it allowed Campbell to score. The final run of the inning came when Matt Oglesby singled to right center field which scored McCrary.
After a scoreless eighth, SSU's comeback fell short in the top of the ninth, although they were able to score twice.
Campbell made the first out of the inning. McCrary walked and advanced to third on a double by Green. Both runners scored on a single by Oglesby. Peter Poole reached on a fielder's choice but Oglesby was out at second. The final out of the game came as Dychal Bowles struck out swinging.
SSU, the fourth seed in the MEAC southern division, left eight runners on base while Delaware State (36-15-1) stranded seven men.
Oglesby drove in three runs for the Tigers while Hagen had two RBIs. McCrary, Virgo and Farris each scored twice while McCrary, Green and Oglesby each collected two hits. Kyle McGowin took the loss. McGowin pitched 5.1 innings and gave up 10 hits, 10 runs, two walks while striking out three. Jackson May struck out three batters in 2.2 innings of relief.
Tony Gatto had three hits for DSU, the top seed in the MEAC northern division, while Elliot pitched 6.2 innings and gave up nine hits, six runs and two walks.
