SAVANNAH, Ga.- Although they got more hits than Bethune-Cookman, Savannah State could not convert them into runs as the Tigers closed their regular season with a 13-3 loss to B-CU at Tiger Field.
SSU out-hit the Wildcats 13 to 12 but Savannah State also made three errors and left 15 men stranded on base.
Cookman ( 30-24, 18-5) jumped out to a 8-0 lead, scoring five times in the first inning and adding two more in the third and one in the top of the sixth.
SSU prevented a shutout by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth as
Ian Farris and
Todd Hagen both drove in runs to slice the Tigers deficit to 8-2.
The Wildcats added three more runs in the seventh to go ahead 11-2 and sent two more runners across home plate in the top of the eighth for a 13-2 cushion.
Savannah State had three hits in the bottom of the eighth and left a pair of runners on base but could only score once. Hagen led off the inning with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Darien Campbell.
In addition to the eighth inning, SSU had base-runners in scoring position but came up empty in the first four innings. The Tigers also left the bases loaded in the seventh inning.
Julius Green had a pair of singles and a double for Savannah State (19-32, 12-12) while Hagen,
Joseph McCrary,
Peter Poole and
Michael McHugh each added two hits.
Tommy Freeman was the loser, giving up seven runs in three innings on the mound.
Cookman's Nick Johnson had three hits, scored three times and drove in three runs. Rayan Gonzalez pitched 5.1 innings and struck out six batters to earn the victory.
