DAYTONA, Fla.- Savannah State played the MEAC's best team down to the wire but lost a twinbill to Bethune-Cookman at Jackie Robinson Park by scores of 2-1 and 9-8.
The first game was a pitcher's duel between SSU's
Kyle McGowin and the Wildcats' Gabriel Hernandez. McGowin finished with 10 strikeouts while Hernandez stuck out five.
Savannah State got on the scoreboard in the second inning on a
Julius Green solo home run. Cookman tied the game in the third on a RBI single by Josh Johnson.
The Wildcats scored the game winner in the fifth when Nick Johnson hit a solo home run.
For the game, B-CU stranded seven base runners while the Tigers left six on base.
Matt Oglesby had a double and a single for SSU.
In the nightcap, Cookman tied the game on a sacrifice fly and scored the winning run thanks to a SSU error, all in the bottom of the seventh.
Cookman took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but SSU bounced back with three runs in the top of the third as
Justin Brown scored on a wild pitch, Oglkesby scored on a ground out by
Peter Poole and
Joseph McCrary scored on a single by Green.
In the bottom of the fourth, B-CU (18-13, 8-3) scored six runs on just two hits to take a 7-3 advantage.
The Tigers answered with four runs in the top of the sixth.
Green led off with a walk followed by a single by
Todd Hagen. Ian Ferris hit a single that scored Green.
Michael McHugh grounded out for the first out of the inning.
Uriah Virgo also grounded out but it was able to allow Hagen to score.
Darien Campbell was hit by a pitch while Oglesby reached on a fielding error which allowed Ferris to score. Campbell later scored to give tie the game at seven.
Green was hit by a pitch in the seventh and later scored on a single by Hagen to give SSU a 8-7 lead.
The Tigers, who made three errors, left five runners on base while Cookman stranded four.
Hagen had three his for Savannah State (11-20, 5-6) while Oglesby added two hits and Green scored twice. McCrary took the loss on the mound.
Brandon Turner had two hits and scored three times for B-CU. Rayan Gonzalez earned the win, pitching four innings with three runs, three walks and three strikeouts.
