Tigers Take Double Header From NCCU

DURHAM, N.C.- Savannah State swept a double header from North Carolina Central by scores of 8-7 and 3-0. Both games were played at the Durham Athletic Park.
 
The Tigers hit home runs in both games as Uriah Virgo hit a long ball in the opener while Peter Poole hit a homer in the nightcap.
 
In the opener, SSU scored three times in the seventh to get the come from behind win.
 
In the second inning, Matt Oglesby singled and later scored on a single by Chris Arnold for a 1-0 lead.
 
The Eagles scored five times off two hits in the third to take a 5-1 lead. SSU made three errors in the inning.
 
Savannah State tied the game in the fourth as Julius Green led off with a single followed by a walk to Oglesby. Ian Ferris hit a single to allow Green to score and then Virgo hit a three-run homer to tie the game at five.
 
Nate Smith hit a solo home run for NCCU in the bottom of the inning to put home team back in front 6-5.
 
In the seventh, SSU left the bases loaded but scored three times.
 
Darien Campbell and Todd Hagen had back to back singles and Poole was intentionally waked to load the bases. Green was hit by a pitch which allowed Campbell to score and Oglesby reached on an error which allowed Hagen and Poole to score to put SSU ahead 8-6.
 
NCCU added a run in the bottom of the inning but it was not enough.
 
Hagan and Ferris had two hits each for SSU while Virgo drove in three runs and Oglesby scored twice. Shawn Gallagher earned the win in relief, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing one hit and one run.
 
Smith and Carter Williamson had two hits apiece for NCCU and Jacob Russell took the loss, giving up two runs in one inning of work.
 
In the second game, Rexford Davis struck out six batters in seven innings. Davis along with Jackson May and Joseph McCrary limited NCCU (4-21, 3-6) to just two hits.
 
Poole hit a solo home run for SSU in the fourth for a 1-0 advantage. Virgo doubled in the seventh and scored on a single by Michael McHugh for a 2-0 lead while Poole hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth that allowed Campbell, who led off with a single, to score to make it a 3-0 game.
 
McCrary had two hits while Poole drove in two runs for Savannah State (10-14, 4-2).
 
Williamson and Anthony Wilson each had a hit for Central. Ruben Rios was tagged with the loss. Rios pitched nine innings and gave up seven hits and three runs.
