NCCU Slips Past Savannah State

DURHAM, N.C.- Troy Marrow singled and later scored the game winning run on a pass ball to give North Carolina Central a 3-2 win over Savannah State at the Durham Athletic Park.

The Eagles led 2-1 after seven innings but SSU (8-14, 2-2) tied the game in the top of the eighth.

Uriah Virgo was hit by a pitch and Joshua Morales entered the game as a pinch runner. Morales reached second after Chris Arnold grounded out. After NCCU changed pitchers, Darien Campbell reached on an error by the second baseman which allowed Morales to score and tie the game at two apiece. Todd Hagen flied out and Campbell was out at second after Joseph McCrary reached on a fielder's choice for the final out in the inning.

The Tigers had one more chance at the plate in the ninth but Matthew Oglesby and Julius Green struck out swinging and Dychal Bowles grounded out to the shortstop to end the game.

Central (4-19, 3-4) had three hits in the fourth but only scored once for a 1-0 lead.

Savannah State knotted the game at one in the fifth, with two outs as Virgo hit a solo home run.

The Eagles went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth as Carter Williamson hit a RBI triple that scored Marrow.

NCCU left seven men on base for the game while Savannah State stranded four.

Campbell had two of SSU's four hits. Kyle McGowin pitched all eight innings for the Tigers and struck out five while giving up eight hits and one walk.

Williamson had three hits and two RBI's for the Eagles. Gavin Guarrera earned the win after pitching 1.2 innings in relief of starter Sam Fulmer. Guarrera struck out two and gave up no hits or runs while Fulmer struck out seven batters.
