SSU Splits Twinbill With Florida A&M

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Savannah State split a double header with Florida A&M at Moore-Kittles Field, winning the opener 9-2 but losing the second contest 10-1.
Darien Campbell and Chris Arnold each drove in two runs in the opener while Kyle McGowin struck out eight batters in eight innings to earn the victory.
Campbell hit a two-run single in the second inning to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead but FAMU answered by tying the game in the bottom of the inning.
In the third, SSU scored four times off two hits as Joseph McCrary, Peter Poole, Uriah Virgo and Chris Arnold each crossed home plate for a 6-2 lead.
Arnold blasted a two-run single in the fifth that plated Todd Hagen and Virgo to expand their lead to 8-2 and in the eighth Dychal Bowles hit a single that allowed Campbell to score.
Daniel Lee had two hits for the Rattlers while David Duncan took the loss after pitching three innings and giving up six runs and six walks.
The second game was a different story as Heath Blackburn struck out seven in seven innings while limiting the Tigers to four hits.
FAMU (4-16, 3-2) scored six times in the bottom of the first as Dylan West hit a grand slam and added four more runs in the second for a 10-0 lead.
SSU scored their lone run in the top of the seventh.
Ian Ferris hit a triple and Virgo's sacrifice fly allowed Ferris to score to prevent the shutout.
Ferris had two hits for the Tigers (7-12, 1-1) . Andrew Garren was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs and four walks in one-third of an inning.
