MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Savannah State University Tennis squad garnered their first match win of season with a 7-0 rout of Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama Saturday. In the second match of the day, Alabama A&M skimmed out a 5-2 win over the Lady Tigers.
In doubles match against Alabama State, the team of
Sandra Kristjansdottir and Nicole Ashideu beat Nathalie Lorenco and Mechelle Barton 8-4. The Lady Tiger team of
Esmira Gheisary and
Chandel McDonie beat Renita Rhone and Shameka Williams 8-2.
Kristjansdottir downed Lorenzo in the number one spot in singles match, 6-1 and 6-2. In the second spot, Gheisery beat Barton in straight sets 6-2 and 6-0. Ashiedu won in straight sets, beating Williams, 6-3 and 6-0. McDonie downed Rhone in the fourth spot 7-5 and 6-1. Hilton beat Katherine Lomax 6-0 and 6-0.
In the second game, SSU fell to Alabama A&M 5-2 overall. In doubles action, the team of Kristjansdottir and Ashiedu fell to Morgan Shaw and Shannon Warner 8-2. In the second court, the team of Gheisery and McDonie fell 8-1 to Denise Cherry and Jessica Taylor. Hilton and
Davita Washington fell in the third doubles match 8-3.
Gheisery downed Warner in singles play, 6-2 and 6-3. Washington picked up her third match win of the season, beating Christa Rogers 6-3 and 6-3. In the number one court, Kristjansdottir fell to Shaw in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0. Ashiedu fell to Denise Cherry in the third match 6-1, and 6-0. Hilton, in the five spot, fell to Taylor in two sets, 6-0 and 6-3.
The Lady Tigers are 1-8 overall and continue play Monday evening against Gardner-Webb University at Hilton Head, South Carolina.
