Tigers Open Baseball Season

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State baseball team opened their 2012 season with a double-header sweep over Coppin State at the Tiger Sports Complex.

It was the Kyle and Kevin show on the mound with Kyle McGowin striking out 6 batters in a 4-3 win in game one and Kevin Herlihy striking out 11 in a 10-0 win in the nightcap.

In the first game, SSU scored twice in the bottom of the first. Herlihy hit a RBI single and later scored a unearned run in the fourth as the Tigers added two more runs for a 4-0 lead. CSU scored twice in the top of the fifth and another in the sixth to round out the scoring.

Both teams combined to leave 13 runners on base with Coppin State leaving six and SSU leaving seven.

Herlihy, Todd Hagen and Antonio Scott all had two hits for the Tigers. McGowin pitched six innings and gave up four hits and three runs. Matt Oglesby earned the save.

Zach Spahn took the loss for the Eagles, giving up six hits and four runs in seven innings and had a double at the plate.

In the nightcap, Herlihy threw a no-hitter and onloy gave up one walk.

Joseph McCrary hit a RBI single in the first and Hagen added a two-run single as SSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Oglesby and Scott drove in runs in the fourth and sixth innings respectively to put the Tigers ahead 5-0.

Savannah State crossed the plate five times in the seventh with Hagen, Chris Arnold, Julius Green, Scott and Darien Campbell scoring runs for a 10-0 cushion.

Campbell, McCrary, Hagen and Scott all had two hits for SSU and Oglesby, McCrary, Hagen and Scott all drove in two runs apiece. Green scored three runs while Campbell touched home plate twice.

Ben Jarboe took the loss for CSU. Jarboe struck out four batters in four innings but also gave up four walks, four runs and three hits.
