Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. - Travis Davidson ran 13 times for 125 yards and three touchdowns to lead Morgan State University to a 45-6 victory over Savannah State University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football game Saturday night at T.A. Wright Stadium.
A crowd of 1,978 watched as SSU (0-5, 0-3) took a 6-0 lead with 8:20 left in the first quarter on quarterback
Antonio Bostick's 1-yard touchdown run, which capped an 11-play, 74-yard drive.
Preston McCarthy's kick for the extra point was blocked.
Morgan State (3-2, 2-0) responded immediately. Chris Flowers returned the ensuing kickoff for an 88-yard touchdown and Earvin Gonzalez kicked the extra point to give the Bears a 7-6 lead with 8:06 remaining in the first quarter.
“There was nothing special about our special teams, and that has been a continuing issue all year,” SSU head coach Steve Davenport said. “We'll continue to address it. But it really is putting us in bad situations right now.”
In the second quarter, Morgan State made it 14-6 when Brian Mann ran for a 4-yard touchdown and Gonzalez kicked the extra point with 1:50 remaining before halftime.
Morgan State led, 14-6, at halftime.
“I am happy for the kids that they're playing one half, but the game is two halves, 60 minutes, and we've been preaching that since Day 1, and we've got to fix it,” Davenport said. “It does us no good to play a good half if we're not going to follow it up with a second half.”
Morgan State, playing its fourth consecutive road game, scored 31 unanswered points in the second half to improve to 7-0 in the series with SSU.
SSU has been outscored, 136-25, in the second half this season.
“We tried to address that,” Davenport said. “We thought, as a staff, that maybe we were coming out (of the locker room) a little late so we came out a little early. Wanted to lather them up and get them focused. … things just started running downhill on us. And we've got to learn how to overcome that as a program.”
Morgan State made it 21-6 on Davidson's 1-yard touchdown run and Gonzalez's kick with 12:14 left in the third quarter. The touchdown capped a six-play, 29-yard drive.
Davidson's 80-yard touchdown run and Gonzalez's kick gave the Bears a 28-6 lead with 7:11 remaining in the third quarter. The two-play, 86-yard scoring drive took only 44 seconds and sealed the victory for Morgan State.
“They just came out and played smashmouth football,” said SSU defensive back
John Wilson, who intercepted Morgan State backup quarterback Seth Higgins' pass in the end zone in the fourth quarter. “They basically just ran it down our throat. I believe we got too lackadaisical in the second half. We've lost every game in the third quarter this year. We've just got to come out and play harder for four quarters.”
Morgan State finished with 272 yards on 48 carries compared to SSU's 130 yards on 38 carries.
SSU's Bostick suffered a left ankle injury when he was sacked for a 5-yard loss in the third quarter.
Victorian Hardison came in at quarterback and on his first play was intercepted by Morgan State defensive back Deshaun Summers, who returned the ball 37 yards to SSU's 11-yard line.
Four plays later, Gonzalez's 21-yard field goal gave Morgan State a 31-6 lead with 4:44 left in the third quarter.
Bostick did not return to the game. He walked on the sideline with the aid of crutches. After the game, he said he has a low left ankle sprain.
“I'll be back,” Bostick said. “I'll get healthy. I'll be back.”
Bostick finished 11-of-22 passing for 112 yards. He was intercepted one time, by defensive back Joe Rankins, to end SSU's first drive of the game. Bostick ran 15 times for 66 yards, both team highs, and a touchdown.
Davenport said receiver
Simon Heyward also suffered an ankle injury.
Morgan State made it 38-6 with 1 minute remaining in the third quarter when Davidson ran for a 7-yard touchdown and Gonzalez kicked the extra point.
In the fourth quarter, the Bears took a 45-6 lead thanks to Tracy Martin's 1-yard touchdown run and Gonzalez's kick with 9:20 left to play.
SSU committed 12 penalties for 138 yards, while Morgan State had nine penalties for 82 yards.
