SSU Tennis squad to host first home MEAC match

Savannah, Ga. – The Savannah State University women's tennis squad will host their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match, and first home game, against North Carolina A&T at the brand new Tiger Tennis Complex, Sunday, January 29th. First serve is set for 2 p.m.

The Lady Tigers added two new players to this year's roster. Nicole Ashiedu of Douglas, Georgia and Esmira Gheisary from Almaty, Kazakhstan joined the team.

Ashiedu , a honor roll graduate from Douglas County High School, was the number one player at Douglas County High last year and finished her career with a  42-9 record. A veteran tennis player, she has played with the Tennis in Motion Academy in Atlanta, Georgia for the past 11 years.

Gheisary transferred to SSU from Eastern Kentucky University where she was a member of the EKU tennis team and won six out of eight matches during her freshman year. In 2008, Gheisary placed seventh in Kazakhstan's singles rankings, and in 2002 she participated in the World Junior Championships in Indonesia.

Returning sophomore Sandra Dis Kristjansdottir was named Iceland's 2010 Tennis Woman of the Year by the Icelandic Tennis Association. She was part of the doubles team that helped shutout Tennessee State University last year at the annual Spring Fest Tennis Tournament in Hilton Head, S.C.

The brand new Tiger Tennis Complex is part of the massive renovation project to Savannah State's athletic facilities, a combined effort of the SSU Athletic Department and The Department of Planning Services.

Sunday's match will be the first of five home matches this spring. Currently the team is 0-2 on the season after dropping two losses to Florida Atlantic and Jacksonville University.
