Tigers Lose To Albany State

MACON,Ga.- Albany State scored a touchdown with 19 seconds left and went on to defeat Savannah State 37-34 in the Music City Classic in front of 7,105 fans at Henderson Stadium.

SSU gave the Rams, ranked 9th in the Division II AFCA Poll and 10th in the Division II Poll, all they could handle.

Trailing 34-30 with 51 seconds left, ASU took the ball and marched 63 yards in five plays as Stan Jennings scored on a 12 yard run.

The Rams drove to the SSU 12 yardline before the Tigers defense forced a third and 10 from the Savannah State 12. Jennings threw back to back incomplete passes before scoring the game winning touchdown.

ASU took a 12-0 lead in the first quarter as Jennings threw a 20 yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Tubbs and Darryl Carey scored on a one yard run. Brand Hamilton missed both extra point attempts.

The Rams extended their lead to 19-0 with 13:30 left in the second quarter as Jennings threw a 11 yard scoring pass to Octavius Staton. Tory Torstenson kicked the extra point.

SSU finally got on the board when Derek williams kicked a career-long 52 yard field goal with 11:43 left.

The Rams led 19-3 at intermission.

Williams booted a 26 yard field goal with 9:58 left in the third to cut SSU's deficit to 19-6, but Albany State answered with a 40 yard field goal by Torstenson with 6:34 left in the quarter to extend the Rams lead to 22-6.

Savannah State would then scored three touchdowns to take a 27-22 lead.

Justin Babb scored on a 5-yard reception from AJ Defilippis with 4:01 left in the third. Reggie Givens returned a blocked punt for a 10 yards for a touchdown with 2:14 left in the quarter and SSU opened the final quarter with Defilippis throwing a 64 yard tiuchdown pass to Brain Lackey with 11:29 on the clock.

Albany State took a 30-27 lead with 1:20 remaining as Carey scored on a six yard run but the Tigers answered when Defilippis threw a 25 yard touchdown pass to Dylan Cook with 51 seconds remaining.

Both team had 382 yards of offense.

Defilippis passed for a career-high 315 yards and three touchdowns while Lackey caught a career high 3 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. Babb ran for 37 yards for SSU (0-1).

Nate Clay led the SSU defense with a career high 18 tackles.

Carey led ASU (1-0) with 51 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Jennings threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns while Staton caught five balls for 85 yards and a touchdown. Rashad McCrae led the Rams defense with five tackles.
