HAMMOND, La.- Southeastern Louisiana broke open and close game with 49 unanswered points as the Lions defeated Savannah State 63-6 in Strawberry Stadium before a crowd of 4,974.
SELU scored on their first possession as Zeke Jones scored on a one yard run with 12:13 left in the first quarter. Seth Sebastin added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
After exchanging punts, Savannah State got on the scoreboard as
Derek Williams capped a 9-play, 42-yard drive with a 27-yard field goal with 3:19 on the clock. The drive stalled at the Lions 15 yard line. The key play on the drive was a 25-yard pass play from A.J. DeFilippis to
Dylan Cook.
SELU took a 14-3 lead at the start of the second quarter when Jones added another one-yard touchdown run.
The Tigers answered with a 39-yard field goal with 12:07 left in the quarter to make the score 14-6. The key play on the 7-play, 43 yard drive was a 26-yard run by
Justin Babb.
SEL added four touchdowns to close out the quarter as Jones scored on another 1-yard run, Brandon Collins caught a 8-yard touchdown pass, Brian Young scored on a 2-yard run and Slim Yarbrough caught a 13-yard touchdown pass for a 42-6 halftime advantage.
Collins caught a 5-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter and Michael Chaney scored on a 13-yard run for a 56-6 lead.
Jordan Wells scored on a 56-yard run with just over seven minutes left in the game for the final score.
SSU (0-2) had 211 yards of offense, getting 125 through the air.
DeFilippis passed for 68 yards while
Antonio Bostick threw for 57 yards. Babb ran for 33 yards on 13 carries while
Simon Heyward caught three passes for 53 yards.
Darren Hunter led the SSU defense with 11 tackles.
The Lions were led by Wells who ran for 62 yards. Stanley passed for 185 yards while Young threw for 161 and Collins caught 6 passes for 54 yards.Avery Crooks had six tackles for SELU (1-1). The Lions had 616 yards of offense but also had 129 yards in penalties.
