Spartans Edge Savannah State

NORFOLK, Va.- John Lynch hit a 2-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning that proved to be the game-winner as Norfolk State nipped Savannah State 4-3 at Miller Field.

The loss stops the Tigers 6-game winning streak and drops their overall record to 26-20.

SSU led 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth but Norfolk State scored three runs in the bottom of the inning and held on to get the win.

Dexter Kelley led off the game with a single and scored when Joseph McCrary hit into a double play for a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers went ahead 2-0 in the second. Peter Poole led off with a walk and scored when Antoino Scott reached on a fielding error by the pitcher.

NSU cut their deficit in half in the third but Savannah State went ahead 3-1 in the top of the fifth when Scott led off with a single and scored on a single by Kelley.

Kelley had two hits and scored a run for SSU while Kevin Herlihy pitched eight innings and struck out six batter to take the loss.

Lynch and James Taylor drove in two runs apiece for the Spartans (16-23) while Ryan VanAssche earned the win with three strikeouts.
