HARDEEVILLE, S.C.- Emory Barkley and Matt Nowacki drove in two runs apiece to lead Savannah State to a 7-5 win over South Carolina-Beaufort at Richard Gray Field.
The victory extends the SSU winning streak to six games and gives the Tigers a 26-19 record.
The win also guarantees the team a winning season with six games left on the schedule.
Savannah State scored five times in the first inning as Matt Oglesby and Russel Cooper hit back to back singles. Peter Poole drew a walk and a single by Barkley brought home Oglesby and Cooper. Nowacki followed Barkley's hit with a triple which allowed Poole and Antoinio Scott, who was running for Barkley, to score. A sacrifice fly by
Kevin Herlihy allowed Nowacki to cross home plate.
The Sand Sharks scored once in the second and twice in the third to slice SSU's lead to 5-3.
Dexter Kelley led off the eighth with a walk and Nowacki bunted his way on base. Cooper's ground-out allowed Kelley to score and a bunt by Don Jackson sent Nowacki to home plate to give the Tigers a 7-3 lead.
USCB scored once in the final innings as Larry Perry had a RBI single in the eighth and Brett Martin hit a RBI double in the ninth.
The Sand Sharks (27-19) had 14 hits but left 14 runners on base. SSU collected 12 hits and also stranded 14 base runners.
Oglesby had a triple and three singles for SSU while
Andrew Garren pitched three innings and struck out three while giving up six hits and three runs to earn the win.
Stephen Richards was tagged with the loss after hurling four innings and giving up six hits and five runs. Keifer Youmans had three hits and scored twice for USCB.
