SAVANNAH, Ga.- Five Savannah State pitchers combined to hold Florida A&M to just 2 hits in the Tigers 13-1 win at Tiger Field.
Michael Allegretti, who earned the win, pitched 5 innings and struck out 3 while giving up 2 hits and 1 run. Tommy Freeman, Gazarra Mitchell, Brandon Primus and
Eric Ransom all pitched in relief and held the Rattlers hitless. Freeman struck out the side in the 6th inning.
At the plate, Matt Nowacki had three hits,
Joseph McCrary had 3 RBIs and Peter Poole scored 3 times.
Poole led off the 2nd with a walk and came home after a single by Emory Barkley for a 1-0 lead.
FAMU (10-25) tied the game in the 3rd inning as Reggie Grant hit a RBI single but Savannah State went ahead for good in the bottom of the inning when McCrary hit a RBI single that scored Dexter Kelley who reached base with a single.
SSU scored 8 runs off 6 hits in the 4th.
Barkley and
Julius Green led off with back to back walks and Nowacki singled to load the bases. Todd Hagen singled to drive home Barkley. After a groundout by
Kevin Herlihy, Kelley was intentionally walked and Matt Oglesby reached on a fielder's choice but Nowacki was thrown out at home for the second out. McCrary singled to drive home Hagen and Kelley and a double by Poole allowed Oglesby and McCrary to cross home plate. Barkley came to the plat again and hit a RBI double that scored Poole and Green singled to score Barkley for a 10-1 advantage.
The Tigers added 2 runs in the 5th as Kelley hit a sacrifice fly to score Nowacki, who led off with a double, and Herlihy, who walked, scored a unearned run after Oglesby reached on a error to extend their lead to 12-1.
Poole led off the 6th with a double and score the final run on a wild pitch.
The win gives SSU a 20-15 record.
Grant and Jim Terrell both had a hit for the Rattlers.
