COLUMBIA, S.C.-
Kevin Herlihy went 4 for 5 to lead Savannah State to a 10-7 win over Benedict at Bomber Field. Herlihy scored three runs on the day and hit two triples.
The game was called after eight innings because of rain.
Herlihy led off the second inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on an error by the third baseman. A single by
Dychal Bowles allowed Herlihy to score to give SSU a 1-0 lead.
A 6-3, 175 sophomore, Herlihy led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to give the Tigers a 2-0 edge.
Savannah State sent four runners across home plate in the fifth to increase their lead to 6-0.
Matt Oglesby led off with a double followed by a single by
Joseph McCrary. Dexter Kelley was intentionally walked to load the bases and a walks to Todd Hagen and Don Jackson allowed Oglesby and McCrary to score. Back to back singles by
Cordarian Robertson and
Chris Arnold drove home Kelley and Hagen.
Herlihy tripled in the sixth to drive home Hagen, who singled. Herlihy was able to score on that same play thanks to an error by the shortstop to give SSU a 8-0 cushion.
Benedict scored six runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning to slice SSU's lead to 8-6.
Robertson led off the seventh with a walk and scored on an error and Hagen led off the eighth with a walk and stole home to make the score 10-6.
Benedict (7-6) scored a run in the bottom of the eighth before the game was stopped.
Savannah State improved to 6-7 as Kyle McGowin picked up the win on the mound. McGowin pitched two innings and gave up one hit while striking out three.
Oglesby had three hits for the Tigers while Hagen scored three runs.
Jonathan Ortega led the Benedict Tigers with three hits and four RBIs. Lamar Lewis took the loss on the mound as he gave up six hits and two runs while striking out three.
