SSU Defeats Coppin State 7-2

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Dexter Kelley and Chris Arnold both hit doubles and Joseph McCrary had a triple as Savannah State downed Coppin State 7-2 at Tiger Field.

The Tigers improve to 12-9 while CSU falls to 2-15.

Kyle McGowin and Emory Barkley combined to limit Coppin State to six hits. McGowin hurled seven innings and struck out five while Barkley pitched two innings in relief and gave up one hit while striking out three.

Julius Green was hit by a pitch and later scored on a passed ball to give Savannah State a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Zach Spahn walked and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1.

Spahn hit a solo home run in the fourth to give Coppin a 2-1 lead.

Kelley and Arnold hit RBI doubles as SSU scored four times in the sixth inning to re-gain the lead 5-2.

In he seventh, McCrary tripled and scored on a wild pitch and Russel Cooper hit a RBI single that allowed Kelley, who reached on a single, to score for a 7-2 advantage.

Coppin had their chances but left seven runners on base.

John Bergwall had two hits for CSU while Spahn scored twice. Jim Vagner took the loss as he pitched 5.1 innings and gave up five runs while striking out three.
