Tigers Split With Coppin State

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State split a double header with Coppin State at Tiger Field, winning the opener 11-9 but losing the second game 8-6.

SSU's Matthew Nowacki had three hits and drove in two runs in the first game white getting two hits and two RBIs in the second contest.

In the first game, the Eagles led 4-0 before Savannah State woke up to score 10 runs getting two in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth inning.

CSU added two runs in the fifth to cut their deficit to 10-6 but Matthew Oglesby walked in a run in the bottom of the seventh to extend the Tigers advantage to 11-6.

Zach Spahn nailed a three-run homer for Coppin State in the eighth to close their gap to 11-9 but they could get no closer.

Oglesby, Julius Green, Nowacki and Dexter Kelley all hits doubles for SSU. Russel Cooper scored twice and drove in two runs while Todd Hagen scored twice and Chris Arnold had two hits. Kevin Herilhy and Andrew Garren combined to strike out nine batters. Herlihy struck out four in five innings while Garren fanned five in just two innings. Herilhy earned the win and Eric Ransom got the save.

Spahn drove in five runs for Coppin State. John Bergwall was tagged with the loss after pitching four innings and giving up 10 runs and three walks.

In the second game, Chris Kashangaki hit a two-run double as Coppin State scored four times in the third inning and Bergwall hit a RBI single in the fourth as CSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Nowacki and Green blasted two run doubles as the Tigers scored six times to take a 6-5 lead.

Bergwall hit a two-run single in the fifth as the Eagles sent three runners across the plate to re-gain the lead, 8-6.

Savannah State only managed one hit the rest of the way as Spahn pitched a complete game with five strikeouts for CSU (2-14).

Green had two hits and two RBIs for SSU (11-9). Michael Allegretti started for SSU and struck out five in 2.1 innings but Dezmond Moore was tagged with the loss as he gave up two runs in one inning of work.
