SSU Falls In First Road Game

CHARLESTON, S.C.- Savannah State played their first road game of the season but fell to Charleston Southern 5-3 at the CSU Ballpark.

Matthew Oglesby had a pair of hits for the Tigers (4-6) while Matthew Nowacki drove in two runs.

SSU scored in the top of the second and led 3-1 in the top of the third.

Dexter Kelley led off the second with a double and scored on a single by Nowacki for a 1-0 lead.

CSU scored a unearned run in the bottom of the second.

Savannah State loaded the bases in the third and walked in two runs.

Oglesby and Joseph McCrary hit back to back singles and Kelley walked to load the bases. A walk to Emory Barkley allowed Oglesby to score and a walk to Nowacki let McCrary cross home plate for a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately, SSU could not get any more runs as Peter Poole hit into a double play to end the inning.

The Buccaneers added a run in the bottom of the third, two in the fifth and one more in the seventh.

Four CSU pitchers combined to limit Savannah State to seven hits. Charlie McCready earned the win while Corey Deighan got the save. Neither surrendered a hit.

Tommy Freeman was tagged with the loss for SSU. Freeman pitched four innings but gave up 6 hits, 4 runs and 2 walks.

Nick Chinners collected three hits for CSU (4-4).
