SAVANNAH, Ga.- After falling behind 4-1, Savannah State scored 17 unanswered runs as they improved to 2-3 with a 18-4 win over Clark Atlanta at Tiger Field.
The Panthers rattled SSU starter Jake Durham for 4 runs and 4 walks in 1.2 innings but relievers Gazarra Mitchell,
Jackson May, Dezmond Moore and Brandon Primus shut down the Clark Atlanta offense the rest of the way.
SSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Joseph McCrary led off with a walk and then stole second and third and scored on
Julius Green's sacrifice fly.
The Panthers scored all four of their runs in the top of the second off three hits. Hardy and J. Carter drew bases loaded walks while Aaron Benjamin and Kelvin Tanner hit RBI singles.
Savannah State erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the third and added four more in the fifth and scored six times in the sixth.
In the third,
Cordarian Robertson, McCrary and Dexter Kelley all scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at four apiece.
Kevin Herlihy hit a sacrifice fly that was able to score Matt Nowacki, who earlier walked, Emory Barkley singled and later scored on an error, Chad Kenney doubled home Matt Oglesby, who reached with a single. Kenney scored on a balk for the 8-4 lead.
In the fifth, SSU added four runs off two hits as Nowacki hit a two-run single that scored Green and Kelley who both drew walks to reach base to make the score 12-4.
The Tigers had four hits while CAU had a pair of errors in the sixth.
Robertson hit a sacrifice fly that scored Oglesby, who led off with a single. Kelley singled home Todd Hagan, who was pinch running for Chad Kenney, who doubled. Don Jackson and Green both walked and scored on errors and
Chris Arnold hit a two-run double that plated Kelley and Antonio Scott, who was hit by a pitch.
SSU had 12 hits on the day.
Robertson had three hits and scored twice while Kelley scored three times. McCrary, Green and Oglesby all scored twice and Nowacki and Arnold drove in two runs each. Mitchell picked up the win, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up three hits and no runs.
Kelley stole five bases on the day while McCrary stole four and Green swiped three.
Manuel Gasper had two hits for Clark Atlanta.
CAU ended the afternoon with five hits and five errors.
