SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State dropped both games of their season opening doubleheader against St. Peter's at Tiger Field by scores of 6-3 and 4-1.
The Tigers had eight errors on he day and were out-hit 17 to 10.
Freshman Kyle McGowin took the loss in game one as he pitched five innings and gave up 6 hits, 6 runs and 4 walks while striking out 4.
The Peacocks jumped out to a 2-0 lead but SSU scored twice in the bottom of the second as
Cordarian Robertson hit a two-run single that scored Peter Poole, who reached on a fielder's choice and Emory Barkley, who singled.
Brian Koster hit a 2-run home run for St. Peter's in the top of the 4th. Poole reached on another fielder's choice in the bottom of the inning and scored on a single by Barkley to make the score 4-3.
St. Peter's scored twice in the top of the 5th for the final runs of the contest.
In the second game, where SSU made seven errors, the Peacocks scored once in the top of the second. The score stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth when
Joseph McCrary III led off with a triple and came home on a RBI single by Todd Hagan to tie the contest at 1-1.
St. Peter's added one run in the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh.
Kevin Herlihy took the loss in the second game despite striking out five batters in six innings. Herlihy gave up six hits, two runs and three walks.
Dom Macaluso struck out four to get the win in the first game while Craig Hughes won the second game and Anythony DeLo earned the save.
Herlihy and Barkley each had two hits for SSU (0-2) in the first game while Robertson had two RBI and Poole scored twice.
Koster drove in three runs for St. Peter's in the first game.
In game two, McCrary III had a pair of hits for the Tigers while Chris Grimes had two doubles and two RBI for the Peacocks (2-0).
