CHARLESTON, S.C.- Savannah State overcame a 10 point deficit with 8:16 left and went on to defeat the Citadel 65-61 in overtime in McAlister Field House before 1,347 fans.
With the score tied at 40, the Bulldogs reeled off ten straight points for a 50-40 lead with 8:16 left in the second half.
SSU (8-18) ended the game with a 15-5 rally, thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Jovoinni Shuler and one by
Joshua Montgomery, to send the game into overtime, tied at 55.
The Tigers got balanced scoring in the extra period from five different players as they out-scored The Citadel 10-6.
Shuler had a game-high 24 points for SSU. Montgomery added 15 points and 8 rebounds, Preston Blackmon had 13 points and 9 assists while
Jyles Smith grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Savannah State opened the contest with a 6-0 lead but the Bulldogs came back to take a 9-8 lead with 14:01 left.
SSU led 15-14 but The Citadel scored eight unanswered points to go ahead 22-15 with 7:40 left.
A 3-pointer by Montgomery cut SSU's deficit to four but they could get no closer and The Citadel led 31-23 at the half.
The Tigers rallied to tie the game at 33 and again at 35 and 40.
After making just nine field goals in the first period, SSU shot 50 percent in the second half and in overtime and finished the contest shooting 40.4 percent from the floor. The Bulldogs shot 43.6 percent for the game.
Zach Urbanus had 17 points for The Citadel (9-18).
The win was Savannah State's 6th in their last seven games.
