Tigers Lose Final Road Game of Season

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- Savannah State fell to 1-9 overall and 1-6 in the MEAC after losing to Bethune-Cookman 59-3 at Municipal Stadium.

The crowd of 4,964 saw Cookman roll up 625 yards of offense despite Savannah State having more possession time (33:52 to 26:00).

Wildcat quarterback David Blackwell ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more. Blackwell scored on runs of 80, 37 and 59 yards while tossing scoring passes of 46 and 16 yards.

B-CU scored 17 points in the first quarter.

Savannah State got on the scoreboard with 11:38 left in the second quarter on a Derek Williams 30 yard field goal to make the score 17-3.

The SSU scoring drive took 10 plays and 42 yards. Key plays on the drive were a 22 yard run by Sheldon Barnes and a 12 yard run by Justin Babb.

B-CU added another touchdown with just under 11 minutes left to expand their lead to 24-3.

The Tigers drove to the Cookman seven last in the first half but Ryan Lewis picked off a AJ DeFilippis pass in the end zone and returned it to the Wildcats 20.

B-CU led 24-3 at the half.

Cookman scored three touchdowns in the third quarter and two more in the fourth to round out the scoring.

DeFilippis passed for 45 yards for the Tigers while Babb ran for 66 yards and caught three passes for 10 yards. Freshmen linebackers Jamani Chavis and Justin Dixon each had eight tackles.

SSU had 202 yards of total offense.

Blackwell ran for 203 yards and passed for 147 for Bethune (7-3). Courtney Keith had two receptions for 64 yard and a touchdown while Harold Love had 12 tackles.
