Tigers Fall to Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va.- Austin Wates hit two home runs and Justin Wright struck out nine batters as 16th ranked Virginia Tech defeated Savannah State 12-0 at English Field.

The game was scoreless until the fifth when Matt Blow hit a solo home run for the Hokies.

Tech added five runs in the sixth as Wates hit a three-run homer and Brent Zimmerman slapped a two-run triple for a 6-0 advantage.

In the seventh, Wates hit a two-run home run as the Hokies plated five more runs to grab a 11-0 lead. Tech scored once in the eighth.

Savannah State (24-22) was held to five hits, all singles. Although they were held scoreless, the Tigers left eight runners on base.

Michael Allegretti took the loss. Allegretti pitched 5.1 innings and struck out five batters while giving up six hits and five runs.

Virginia tech improved to 33-15 with the victory.
