SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State combined to pound out 28 hits and score 22 runs in a double-header sweep of North Carolina Central at Tiger Field.
In a battle of the newest additions to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, SSU won the opener 11-1 and completed the sweep with a 11-6 victory in the nightcap.
Michael Allegretti struck out nine batters in seven innings in the opener while
Dexter Kelley had three hits and scored three runs.
Kelley had a two-run double to help the Tigers to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
NCCU cut Savannah State's lead to 3-1 in the third but
Jonathan Ross hit a RBI single in the fourth and
Kevin Herlihy had a two-run single in the fourth to help SSU expand their lead to 8-1.
Brandon Webster had a RBI double in the sixth,
Cordarian Robertson bunted hom a run in the seventh and Webster had a RBI single in the eighth to round out the scoring.
Derrell Parker had a pair of hits for NCCU while Drew Robinson pitched 4.1 innings and gave up nine hits and eight runs in the loss.
In the second game, SSU trailed 4-3 but scored three times in the fifth and five times in the sixth to pull away.
In the fifth, Ross hit a sacrifice fly that scored a run, Kelley's ground-out scored a run and
Matthew Nowacki hit a RBI single.
Blake Lee had a two-run single in the sixth, Ross doubled in a run and Kelley singled in a run.
North Carolina Central plated two runners in the seventh but it would not be enough.
The Eagles scored two runs off three hits in the third but SSU answered to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning.
Joseph McCrary reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Lee who later scored on a wild pitch and Kelley singled home Ross, who was hit by a pitch.
NCCU (0-25) added two runs in the top of the forth to take a 4-3 lead.
Lee had three hits and along with Kelley drove in three runs for SSU (13-13). Lee and McCrary both scored three runs.
Mark Sherrod earned the win, giving up six hits and four runs in five innings.
Edward Pegues had three hits for the Eagles. Jeff Citero took the loss, giving up nine hits and seven runs.
