DURHAM, N.C.- The Savannah State baseball team split a double-header with North Carolina Central at the Durham Athletic Park, losing 7-6 but winning the nightcap 17-3.
SSU improves to 15-16 while the Eagles have a 1-30 record.
Savannah State trailed 6-3 entering the seventh inning but scored three runs to tie the game. NCCU loaded the bases and Kurt Wilson singled to drive home the winning run to give the Eagles their first win of the season.
The Eagles scored six runs in the third off four hits to take a commanding lead but SSU answered when
Matthew Nowacki scored in the fourth and hit a two run double in the fifth to cut their deficit to 6-3.
Nowacki had three RBI's for the Tigers while
Jonathan Ross and
Dexter Kelley scored twice.
Jason Wynn took the loss. Sherrod pitched 3.1 innings and struck out five but gave up six runs, six hits and five walks.
Wilson went 3-for-3 for NCCU while reliever Glenn Frye earned the win.
SSU bounced back in the second game as the Tigers pounded out 13 hits.
The Tigers scored seven runs off three hits in the first inning as Ross hit a three run homer, John Arnold hit a two-run double,
Julius Green had a RBI single and
Blake Lee hit a sacrifice fly that scored Arnold.
NCCU scored once in the bottom of the first but Savannah State answered with four runs in the third as Green and Lee doubled in runs and Ross and
Dychal Bowles hit RBI singles for a 11-1 lead.
The Eagles made it a 11-2 game after four innings but SSU struck for four runs in the fifth. Kelley and Nowacki doubled in runs and
Kendrick Jones blasted a two-run home run over the right field fence for a 15-2 advantage.
In the sixth, Lee doubled and later scored on an error and Arny Roberson singled home
Errol Jones, who reached on a error, to expand the SSU lead to 17-2.
NCCU scored a run in the bottom of the sixth for the final run of the contest.
Ross drove in four runs and along with Lee, scored three times for SSU.
Kevin Herlihy pitched five innings and struck out four to get the win.
Justin Goodson scored twice for the Eagles while Doug Dalley gave up six runs and five walks in one-third of an inning to get the loss.
