SSU Splits With Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Savannah State split a double-header with Campbell, winning the first game 21-5 before falling 9-5 in the nightcap at Taylor Field.

The Tigers exploded for 25 hits in the opener.

SSU led 4-1 after the first inning and 5-1 after two.

Campbell scored twice in the third but the Tigers responded with four runs in the fourth.

The Camels made the score 9-4 in the fifth but Savannah State scored three times in the seventh and four more times in the eighth to increase their advantage to 16-4.

SSU added five more runs in the ninth and Campbell scored once.

Mike Allegretti earned his first win of the season. Allegretti pitched seven innings and gave up 11 hits, four runs and three walks while striking out two.

Joseph McCrary had four hits and five RBIs to lead SSU at the plate. Matt Nowacki and Emory Barkley drove in four runs apiece while Darien Campbell, Jon Ross, Julius Green and Dexter Kelly scored four times each. Kelley, Ross, Green, Nowacki, Ross and John Arnold all had three hits while Campbell added two hits.

In the second game, Campbell broke a tie game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth and the Camel pitchers struck out all three SSU batters in the ninth to get the win.

The contest was tight from start to finish. Campbell scored a run in the first inning and the Tigers answered in the second when Arnold hit a RBI single.

Both teams scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth. The Camels went ahead 5-4 in the sixth but Savannah State answered in the top of the eighth when Nowacki hit a RBI double to tie the game.

Campbell (6-4) scored four runs off five hits and left two on base in the eighth.

For the game, Campbell left 12 runners on base while the Tigers stranded six.

Ross and Campbell had two hits each to pace Savannah State (2-9). Kevin Herlihy took the loss, pitching 2.2 innings and giving up seven hits and five runs.
