SAVANNAH, Ga.- Clinging to a one run lead, Savannah State scored four runs in the eighth inning and held on for a 11-8 victory over Mercer in a game played at historic Grayson Stadium.
Leading 7-6, SSU scored four times off five hits to push their lead to 11-6.
In the bottom of the eighth,
Joseph McCrary led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by
Darien Campbell.
Blake Lee's single allowed McCrary and Campbell to score and a triple by
Jonathan Ross brought home Lee.
Dexter Kelley hit a double that plated Ross for all the scoring in the inning.
Mercer scored twice in the ninth as Tyler McCarty hit a two run double to make the score 11-8.
The win improves SSU to 10-13 while the Bears fall to 16-11.
Ross was hit by a pitch in the first inning and scored on a single by Kelley for a 1-0 SSU lead.
Jacob Tanis led off the fourth with a solo home run as Mercer scored three times to go ahead 3-1.
The Bears added two more runs in the top of the fifth to expand their lead to 5-1 but Savannah State answered with two runs via the sacrifice fly to cut Mercer's lead to 5-3.
Travis Benn led off the top of the six with a solo shot to give Mercer a 6-3 lead but SSU tied the game in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two run double by Campbell and a RBI single by Lee.
The Tigers went ahead to stay in the seventh when Emory Barkley doubled and scored on a RBI single by Don Jackson.
Lee had four hits and three RBIs for SSU. Kelley also drove in three runs and Campbell crossed the plate three times.
Kevin Herlihy earned the win, despite giving up 13 hits in 7.1 innings.
Tanis had four hits, two RBI's and scored twice for the Bears. James Kimsey took the loss, giving up two runs in two-thirds of a inning.
