SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State swept a double-header from Maryland-Eastern Shore at Tiger Field, winning the first game 13-2 and the second 3-2.
The win gives SSU a 6-11 mark while The Eagles fell to 0-17.
In the opener,
Michael Allegretti pitched eight innings and struck out seven while
Jonathan Ross hit a solo home run.
UMES jumped put to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but Savannah State answered with nine runs off five hits. UMES made four of their five errors in the first inning.
SSU went ahead 10-1 in the fourth. Both teams scored once in the sixth inning and
Brandon Webster hit a two-run double in the eighth to put the Tigers ahead 13-2.
The Eagles scored the final run of the game in the top of the ninth.
Dexter Kelley had three hits for SSU and Ross had two hits. Kelley, Webster and
Julius Green all drove in a pair of runs while Ross and
Darien Campbell scored twice.
Phil Vaughn had three hits for UMES. Donnie Haines took the loss, giving up 10 runs and eight hits.
UMES stranded 10 runners on base.
In the second game,
Kendrick Jones stole home in the sixth inning in what turned out to be the game winning run.
SSU scored in the second inning for a 1-0 lead when
Kevin Herlihy's ground-out paved the way for Green to score but Eastern Shore tied the game in the third on a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the third SSU went ahead 2-1 when Kelley hit a sacrifice fly that scored Campbell who led off the inning with a double.
In the sixth, Jones entered the contest as a pinch runner for Emory Barkley, who doubled. A fly-out by Green allowed Jones to advance to third. Herlihy walked to put runners on first and third. In a double steal, Jones came home and Herlihy advanced to second.
Dychal Bowles ended the inning with a strikeout.
Trevon Johnson stole home for UMES in the seventh to cut SSU's lead to 3-2 but that is how it ended.
Barkley had three hits for the Tigers while
Mark Sherrod pitched a complete game with three strikeouts to earn the win.
Vaughn had three hits for UMES. John Deschamps suffered the loss, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out four.
