Spartans Out Hit Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Norfolk State collected 18 hits as the Spartans defeated Savannah State 13-5 in the final day of action in the Savannah State Classic played at Tiger Field.

Rasberry (four RBI) and Montgomery (three RBI) did the damage for the visitors as they combined to drive in seven runs as well as hit one home run apiece. Egan hurled five innings and struck out six to earn the win on the mound.

Savannah State (1-6) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Darien Campebll led off with a double and came home on a sacrifice fly by Julius Green.

Montgomery blasted a three-run home run to help NSU go ahead 4-1 in the second inning.

Rasberry hit a three-run home run in the fourth to help extend the Spartans' lead to 8-1. SSU's Matt Nowacki hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 8-2.

Rasberry hit a RBI single and later scored in the fifth to give Norfolk State a 10-2 lead.

Savannah State scored once in the fifth and twice in the six to get within 10-5.

NSU added three runs in the top of the ninth to improve to 2-3-1.

Hoggard had four hits for Norfolk State while Joyce and Hairston had three each.

Campbell, E. Barkley and D. Jackson all had two hits each for SSU. Kevin Herlihy took the loss on the mound for the Tigers. Herlihy pitched four inning and gave up 10 hits and eight runs while striking out four.
