FAMU Overcomes Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Florida A&M scored three runs in the ninth in a 16-14 win over Savannah State in the Savannah State Classic played at Tiger Field.

The Tigers led 14-11 after five innings of play but FAMU scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings before pushing three runs across the plate in the ninth.

He Blackburn earned the win for the Rattlers, pitching 4.2 innings and striking out six while Jar Jeffries scored five runs.

Jeffries scored in the top of the first to give FAMU a 1-0 lead but Savannah State went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the inning as Darien Campbell led off with a single and came home on Dexter Kelley's double. Kelley later scored on a wild pitch.

The Rattlers tied the game in the second but SSU exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second for a 8-2 advantage. Julius Green and D. Bowles both hit two run singles in the inning for SSU.

FAMU cut their deficit to 8-6 with four runs in he top of the third but the Tigers answered with three in the bottom half of the inning when Kelley hit a three-run double.

Justin Abney led off the fourth with a solo home run for Florida A&M as they scored three runs to pull within 11-9.

Savannah State scored a unearned run in the fourth for a 12-9 lead.

Both teams scored twice in the fifth. FAMU runners scored on a walk and a pass ball while the Tigers got a RBI single from Brandon Webster and Joe McCrary walked in a run.

Campbell, Green and Kelley all had three hits for SSU. Kelley had four RBIs and scored three times. Green and Bowles drove in two runs each. Campbell scored three times while Green, Matt Nowacki and D Jackson all scored twice.

Mike Allegretti pitched four inning and struck out six for SSU. Allegretti was tagged with the loss after giving up nine runs and eight hits.
