COLLEGE PARK, Ga.-
Dexter Kelley hit a grand slam in the fifth inning and Savannah State went on to earn their first win of the season in a 16-4 rout of Clark Atlanta at Bill Evans Park.
The Tigers scored once in the first inning, four times in the second and once in the third for a 6-0 lead.
Blake Lee led off the game with a walk and came home on a ground out by Matt Nowacki.
In the second inning,
Kevin Herlihy led off with a double and scored on an error by the catcher.
Cordarian Robertson walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe McCrary and Lee singled and came on when
Jonathan Ross hit a home run for a 5-0 lead.
Dychal Bowles led off the third with a walk and made the score 6-0 when he he came home on John Arnold's ground-out.
Nowacki hit a two run double in the fourth and Bowles smacked a two run single to extend SSU's advantage to 10-0.
The shutout ended in the bottom of the inning when CAU scored twice to cut their deficit to 10-2.
Savannah State answered the Panthers with five runs in the fifth.
Lee and McCrary hit back to back singles and Ross walked before Kelley hit his grand slam. Arnold hit into a double play but it allowed
Kendrick Jones, who earlier walked to score to increase SSU's lead to 15-2.
Clark Atlanta added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to draw within 15-4.
SSU scored once in the seventh when Kelly walked and came home on a single by Bowles.
The Tigers (1-3) banged out 14 hits.
Lee and Bowles had three hits each while McCrary, Kelley and Herlihy collected two hits apiece. Kelley drove in four runs while Nowacki and Bowles drove in three runs each. Ross and Arnold each had two RBIs. Lee scored four runs followed by Kelley who scored three and McCrary, Ross and Jones who crossed home plate twice.
Joseph Jackson gave up one hit through three innings and earned the win. he struck out three batters.
CAU (0-1) was led by Michael Leverett who had two hits. William Watkins pitched 3.1 innings, gave up 10 runs, eight hits and five walks and was tagged with the loss.
