Central Florida Rallies Past SSU

ORLANDO, Fla.- Central Florida scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to post a come 8-6 win over Savannah State before a crowd of 952 at Jay Bergman Field.

The loss dropped SSU to 0-3 while the Knights upped their record to 3-0.

Central Florida scored twice in the bottom of the first but SSU cut their lead in half in the top of the fourth when Jonathan Ross hit a solo home run.

UCF went ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the inning but Savannah State added two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Darien Campbell and James Lee both drew walks and later scored. Campbell scored on a wild pitch and Lee came home on a ground out by Dexter Kelley.

The Knights left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth but were only able to score one run to go ahead 4-3.

Savannah State scored three times in the seventh to go ahead 6-4.

Campbell led off with a single and came home on a single by Kelley. Ross walked and scored on a fielding error by the shortstop and Kelly scored on a sacrifice bunt by Julius Green.

Austin Johnston hit a solo home run for UCF in the bottom of the seventh and the Knights plated three runners in the eighth off three hits to get the win.

Kelley had a pair of hits and two RBI for SSU while Ross had two hits and scored twice. Campbell scored twice for the Tigers and Emory Barkley added two singles. Mark Sherrod started on the mound for SSU, pitching 4.2 innings and gave up seven walks, six hits and four runs while striking out five. Jason Wynn took the loss as he gave up four hits and three runs in three innings.

Jonathan Griffin had three hits for Central Florida and Chase Bradford got the win and Joe Rogers earned the save.
