EMMITSBURG, Md.- Mount Saint Mary's out-scored Savannah State 15-9 during the overtime period and went on to defeat the Tigers 68-62 before a crowd of 1,703 in Knott Arena.
SSU trailed by eight at halftime but outscored their opponents 33-25 in the second period to send the game to an extra period.
In overtime, the Mountaineers used a 8-0 start to pull away. MSM led 66-57 with 43 seconds left before
Jovonni Shuler hit a 3-pointer and a tip in to get the Tigers within 66-62.
Shuler led SSU (1-4) with a game-high 23 points and six rebounds. Preston Blackmon added 16 points and six assists while Josh Montgomery had 14 points.
MSM jumped out to a 8-0 run to start the contest and led 21-8 at the halfway point. Savannah State was able to pull within seven but the Mountaineers answered and took a 28-20 lead into the half.
A layup by Montgomery followed by a 3-pointer and layup by Shuler sparked a 21-6 run by SSU to start the second period which led to a 41-34 lead with 9:47 left.
Mt. St.Mary's answered with 12 straight points to go ahead 46-41 with 5:16 on the clock.
A jumper by Blackmon tied the score at 51 with 2:21 left . The Mountaineers went ahead by two with 1:42 left but Shuler made a layup at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
After shooting 29 percent from he floor in the first half, SSU warmed up and made 14 of 26 shots in the second period. The Mountaineers shot 52 percent from the field in the opening half but only 33 percent in the second frame. MSM shot 66.7 percent in overtime.
Shawn Atupem scored 18 points and had 6 rebounds for MSM (1-2).
