Tigers Lose To Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Devin Dominguez threw for 269 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Alabama State to a 24-0 win over Savannah State at the Cramton Bowl before 5,237 fans.

The win improves the Hornets to 4-3 while Savannah State falls to 0-8.

ASU drove to the Tigers 8 on their first possession of the game but Andrew Lyons missed a 30-yard field goal attempt with 12:23 on the clock.

The Hornets put together a 46 yard drive midway in the second quarter that ended with Dominguez throwing a 8-yard touchdown pass to Nick Andrews. Lyons converted the extra point and ASU led 7-0 with 5:50 left in the quarter.

Antonio Proctor returned the kickoff 65 yards to the ASU 30 to give the Tigers good field position.

The Tigers drove to the Alabama State 18 but a 9 -yard loss on a running play, a sack that loss 9 yards and false start penalty that cost SSU 5 yards push the team back to the ASU 41 for a 4th and 32 situation.

ASU took over and drove to the Savannah State 20 but could not score as Dominguez' 4th down pass to Landon Jones was incomplete with less than a minute left in the second quarter.

Lyons missed a 41 yard field goal attempt early in the third quarter.

With eight minutes on the clock, SSU drove from their own 28 to the Hornets' 34 but a 4th down pass play from Antonio Bostick to Simon Heyward was incomplete.

SSU never got any closer than the Alabama State 41 the rest of the game.

ASU took over and marched 66 yards in 6 plays as Dominguez tossed a 12 yard touchdown pass to Jones with 2:03 left in the quarter for a 14-0 lead.

Early in the 4th quarter, Bostick was driving SSU downfield when Jacques Rickerson intercepted a pass and raced 59 yards for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead.

Alabama State did a onside kick and recovered the ball at their own 44.

The Hornets reached the SSU 18 but CJ Smith intercepted a pass in the endzone and returned it to the Tigers 27.

With just under 6 minutes left in the game, Lyons booted a 36 yard field goal to give ASU a 24-0 advantage.

The ASU offense rolled up 334 yards while the Hornets defense had 8 sacks and held SSU to 167 yards. Alabama State also had 13 penalties for 105 yards.

Sheldon Barnes led the Tigers with 80 yards on the ground while Bostick completed 12 of 23 passes and a interception for 92 yards. Heyward hauled in 8 passes for 63 yards. Smith had a career-high 11 tackles for SSU.

The SSU defense held the Hornets to just 50 yards on the ground. Quenda McKibbon had 21 yards rushing for ASU, Andrews caught 5 passes for 55 yards while Jimmy Daniels and Brandon Roberts had 8 tackles apiece.
