Tigers End Season With Win

CHARLESTON, S.C.- Dexter Kelley hit a two-run single in the seventh inning to give Savannah State a season-ending 6-5 win over Charleston Southern at Buccaneer Ballpark.

The Tigers lost the first game of a double-header 5-1.

Tristan Smith led off the seventh with a double down the left field line and Matt Oglesby reached on an error. Jonathan Ross grounded out but it allowed the runners to advance a base. Andrew Mendez struck out but Kelley followed with his single.

In the bottom of the inning, Robert Ramsdale relieved Michael Allegretti on the mound.

The first batter struck out but Patrick Dolan tripled.Tyler Thornburg fouled out and the game was over when Brantley Meier grounded out to first.

Thornburg hit a two-run home run in the third as CSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Brett Pointer hot a two-run homer for SSU in the fourth and Julius Green scored a run on Brandon Webster's sacrifice bunt to tie the game. The Bucs added a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 5-3.

Smith scored on a wild pitch for the Tigers in the fifth to cut their deficit to 5-4.

SSU used six pitchers in the game and Allegretti earned the win while Ramsdale got the save.

Kelley and Pointer drove in two runs apiece while Smith scored twice.

Thornburg took the loss for CSU (16-33).

In the opener, Brandon Roberts struck out 12 batters and threw a three-hitter as he held Savannah State to just one run.

Jarrell Arnold pitched a five-hitter for the Tigers as he fanned three batters.

The Tigers were hurt by making seven errors that led to all Charleston Southern runs being unearned.

Smith led off the game with a solo home run to give SSU a 1-0 edge. The Bucs scored three times in the bottom of the inning and added single runs in the fifth and sixth to get the win.

Savannah State ends their season 25-26.
