Spartans Sweep Savannah State

NORFOLK, Va.- Norfolk State defeated Savannah State in a double-header at Miller Field 13-12 and 8-2.

In the first game, NSU entered the bottom of the seventh down 12-9 but scored four times in the bottom of the inning to get the win as Chris Joyce hit a two-run RBI single to tie the score and Jerrod Farley hit a RBI single for the game winner.

The Spartans led 3-0 after two innings but SSU scored once in the fourth to cut their deficit in half.

NSU scored five times in the fifth to increase their lead to 8-1.

The Tigers scored three times in the sixth while NSU added one. Savannah State had eight runners to cross the plate in the seventh to to ahead by three.

Jonathan Ross, Andrew Mendez and Dexter Kelley all had three hits for the Tigers. Ross and Brett Pointer drove in two runs each and Ross scored three times.

Michael Allegretti took the loss on the mound, pitching one-third of an inning and gave up three hits and two runs.

In the second game, Chase Davenport pitched a five-hitter for NSU.

Savannah State scored twice in the first inning but the Spartans answered with one in the bottom of the inning. NSU added four more runs in the third and three more in the fourth for the final runs of the game.

SSU (23-23) was led by Kelley who had a pair of singles. Allegretti took the loss after hurling 2.2 innings and giving up five hits and five runs.

NSU improved to 15-18 with the victories.
