COLUMBIA, S.C.- In the battle of the Tigers, Division I Savannah State held of Division II Benedict 10-8 at Capital City Stadium.
With the game tied at eight, SSU scored a run in the sixth and another in the ninth to pull out the win and improved to 15-14.
The loss drops Benedict to 14-11.
Matt Oglesby was hit by a pitch in the first inning and later scored on a RBI single by
Dexter Kelley.
With Benedict leading 2-1 entering the third, SSU tied the score when
Andrew Mendez, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a pass ball. Savannah State left the bases loaded but was only able to score one run in the inning.
SSU broke the tied in the fourth with six runs on four hits.
Tristan Smith led off with a double and advanced to third on an error by the pitcher. Oglesby and Jonathan Ross walked to load the bases and Smith came home when Menedez drew a walk. Kelley hit a single to drive home Oglesby and Ross was able to score on a pass ball. Matt Nowacki hit a single to bring home Mendez and Kelley and
Darien Campbell's fielder's choice allowed Nowacki to cross home plate.
Benedict scored three times in the fourth and three times in the fifth to tie the game at eight.
Campbell, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a wild pitch to put Savannah State ahead 9-8 in the sixth. In the ninth, Smith led off with a solo home run for the final run of the contest.
Kelley and Nowacki each had two RBIs for Savannah State while Oglesby, Mendez and Smith all scored twice. Oglesby, Kelley and Smith each had two hits for the winners.
Eric Ransom pitched 4.2 innings of relief and earned the win. Ransom gave up three hits and one run.
Anthony Browning had three hits for Benedict while Justin Smalls took the loss. Smalls pitched 4.1 innings and gave up two hits, two runs and four walks.
Benedict out-hit SSU 13 to eight but both teams made four errors. They also combined to leave 23 runners on base.
