DURHAM, N.C.- After losing a double header to North Carolina Central on Saturday, Savannah State bounced back to pound the Eagles 21-7 on Sunday at DBAP.
Darien Campbell had four hits for the Tigers while
Dexter Kelley and
Tristan Smith drove in four runs apiece. Shane Mathews pitched three scoreless innings in middle relief to get the win.
Campbell scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first and Kelley scored because of an error in the second to give SSU a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers had the bases loaded in the third but could not produce any runs but made up for it in the fourth by scoring three times off three hits as Smith singled in a run and Matt Nowacki hit a two-RBI single that scored Smith and
David Washington for a 5-0 advantage.
NCCU scored twice in the bottom of the fourth but The Tigers added three runs in the top of the fifth as Smith doubled in a pair of runs and later came home on a throwing error.
The Eagles had five runners to cross the plate in the bottom half of the fifth thanks to Murray Blake's three-run homer to cut SSU's lead to 8-7.
Savannah State (5-7) broke the game open with seven runs off threes hits in the sixth to increase their lead to 15-7.
The Tigers scored two more times in the seventh and a grand slam by Kelley in the eighth made the score 21-7. SSU left the bases loaded in the ninth but could not score any runs.
SSU left 10 runners stranded on the afternoon while Central left 11 runners on base.
Kurt Wilson had three hits for NCCU and Blake drove in three runs. On the mound, Anthony Cobb took the loss, despite striking out five in four innings.
NCCU (2-5) made seven errors on the day.
