SSU Splits Double-Header With Morehouse

ATLANTA, Ga.- Savannah State and Morehouse split a double-header at Perkerson Park in a battle of the Tigers. SSU won the opener 7-4 while the Maroon Tigers won the nightcap 4-3.

Darien Campbell led off the first game with a single and then stole second. After Matt Nowacki flied out and Jonathan Ross walked, Brent Pointer singled to bring home Campbell for a 1-0 SSU lead. Dexter Kelley walked to load the bases and Andrew Mendez flied out to left but it was deep enough to allow
Ross to score and put Savannah State ahead 2-0.

Morehouse scored a run in the bottom of the second but SSU added two more runs off two hits in the top of the third to increase their advantage to 4-1. Pointer singled and later scored when a ball got pass the MC catcher and Mendez hit a RBI single which allowed Kelley, who reached on a pass ball, to score. The Maroon Tigers scored in the bottom of the third to trim SSU's lead to 4-2.

Mendez hit a RBI double for the Tigers in the fifth and Julius Green hit a sacrifice fly which allowed Mendez to score for a 6-2 SSU lead. Morehouse added a run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 6-3.

Mendez walked in the ninth and came home on a double by Matt Oglesby for the final run of the contest.

The teams combined for 15 hits but also combine to strand 17 runners on base. SSU had eight hits and left eight runners on base. The Tigers also made four errors.

Mendez drove in three runs, had two hits and scored twice. Pointer and Oglesby also had two hits each. Jarrel Arnold pitched a complete game and gave up seven hits.

Jason Mills had two hits and two RBI for Morehouse. Mills also pitched 4.1 innings and gave up seven hits, six runs and four walks.

In game two, Adam Wright pitched a complete game as he struck out eight and limited SSU to just three hits.

Kelley led off the second inning with a walk and Jordan Monico followed with a two-run home run for a 2-0 SSU lead . Morehouse scored once in the bottom of the inning but SSU answered in the top of the third as Green, who walked, scored on an error by the shortstop.

Morehouse pulled within one in the bottom of the sixth. In the bottom of the ninth, Hank McCladdie hit a RBI single to left to tie the game and Bryan Butcher hit a RBI single to right for the game winner.

Monico had two hits and two RBI for SSU (4-5) while Oglesby pitched 6.2 innings in the loss. Oglesby surrendered eight hits and four runs while getting five strikeouts.

Leshawn Lettsome had two hits for Morehouse.
