BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Alabama Birmingham scored six times in the fifth inning and went on to defeat Savannah State 11-5 at Young Memorial Field.
The Blazers (12-10) scored once in the third and once in the fourth for a 2-0 lead thanks to four SSU errors.
In the fifth, UAB scored six runs off four hits. Digger Towe drove in a pair of runs with a single and Luke Stewart hit a two run home run.
Savannah State scored three times with two outs in the top of the sixth to cut their deficit to 8-3.
Darien Campbell singled and Matt Nowacki was hit by a pitch. Both runners came home on a double by Jonathan Ross and Ross scored when
Andrew Mendez singled.
Stewart hit his second homer of the night in the seventh as the Blazers added three more runs to increase their advantage to 11-3.
Matt Oglesby hit a RBI single for the Tigers in the eighth and
David Washington scored on a pass ball in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Campbell and Ross had two hits each for SSU (14-12). Ross also scored twice and had two RBI.
Robert Ramsdale took the loss on the mound. Ramsdale pitched 4.1 innings and gave up eight runs, six hits and three walks while striking out three.
Shay Crawford struck out 10 for the Blazers and Towe had four RBI.
