Sharks defeat Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga.- South Carolina Beaufort defeated Savannah State 12-9 at Tiger Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers led 5-1 but Beaufort scored eight runs in the top of the sixth.

Trailing 12-6 entering the bottom of the ninth, SSU scored three times but it would not be enough.

Dexter Kelley went 3-for-5 for the Tigers and drove in four runs. Jarrel Arnold was roughed up for 10 hits and seven runs in five innings on the mound for SSU.

The Sharks took a 1-0 lead in the second but Savannah State tied the game in the fourth when Matt Oglesby singled to bring home Brett Pointer, who reached on a fielder's choice.

The Tigers scored four times off three hits in the fifth to go ahead 5-1. David Washington singled, Darien Campbell was hit by a pitch and Matt Nowacki singled to bring home Washington. Jonathan Ross drew a walk, Campbell was able to score on an error by the catcher and a single by Kelley allowed Nowacki and Ross to come home.

Beaufort scored eight times off seven hits in the sixth which was aided by a base clearing double by T. J. Kemp to go ahead 9-5. SSU was able to get one run back in the bottom of the inning when Campbell singled home Tristan Smith, who doubled.

The Sharks added two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to increase their lead to 12-6. In their last at bat, Savannah State Ross hit a solo home run, Shawn Gallagher walked and came home when Kelley belted a shot over the right center field fence.

SSU, who had 13 hits, saw their record fall to 5-9.

Kemp drove in three runs for USCB (19-10) while Ryan Philpott earned the win on the mound. Philpott pitched one inning and gave up three hits and four runs.
